Notes and InformationД«ackup: LetвЂ™s start with the obvious: Before you embark on any upgrade to your Mac, make sure you have one or more current backups available. Once you finish the install, jump ahead to Post Install: Configure macOS Catalina. You should read through the Notes and Information sections, and then pick which of the two types of clean installs you with to perform. IвЂ™ve organized this guide into four sections: If it does have an OS on it, youвЂ™ll need to erase the drive first to ensure a clean installation. The second method has fewer steps, and erasing the target drive is optional, as long as it doesnвЂ™t contain any version of the Mac OS. The two methods are similar, though the first, installing on a startup drive, requires a number of extra steps including creating a bootable installer and erasing all data from the startup drive. WeвЂ™re going to look at two types of clean installs: installing on the current startup drive and installing on a drive that isnвЂ™t the startup and doesnвЂ™t contain an operating system. So, starting from scratch may be the better choice.

You can restore your user data to a clean install but if youвЂ™re going to the effort of wiping your startup drive, youвЂ™ve probably been having some type of issue that could come back if you restore from the old data. ItвЂ™s like the day you turned on your Mac for the first time.

Click on the Apply button, then click on the Done button when it activates.The downside to a clean install is that not only is the system a new, fresh copy, but your user data is new as well or a better way to put it: all your data is gone, erased.

Provide a volume name, usually 'Macintosh HD.'.

Set the Format type to APFS (SSDs, only if installing Mojave or Catalina ) or Mac OS Extended, (Journaled.).

When Disk Utility loads select the target drive (out-dented entry w/type and size) from the side list.

Select Disk Utility and click on the Continue button.

The Utility Menu will appear in from 5-20 minutes.

Immediately, at or before the chime, hold down the (Command-Option-R) keys until a globe appears.

If possible, back up your files before proceeding. Internet/Network Recovery of El Capitan or Later on a Clean Disk If this doesn't work, then try this instead:

Select Install OS X and click on the Continue button.

Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu.

Click on the Apply button, then wait for the Done button to activate and click on it.

Set the Format type toВ APFS (SSDs only) orВ Mac OS Extended (Journaled.).

Click on the Erase button in Disk Utility's toolbar.

When Disk Utility loads select the target drive (out-dented entry w/type and size info) from the Device list.

Select Disk Utility from the Utility Menu and click on the Continue button.

Restart the computer.В Immediately, at or before the chime, hold down the Command and R keys until the Apple logo and progress bar appear.

When you have reinstalled macOS please be sure not to automatically encrypt the drive.
